Christmas Connections for Kids
August 1, 2017 - December 18, 2017
Perhaps our most cherished resource is our children. The men and women of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office recognize and appreciate this, and work hard to build and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and our youth. One way we make a difference in the lives of many less privileged children in Adams County is through our toy drive “Christmas Connections for Kids.” However, we cannot do it alone, we need your help.
The current population for Adams County is approximately 490,000, with the county’s population projected to double between 2010 and 2040. According to the U.S. Census Bureau 2010 Report, Adams County was the fifth largest county in Colorado by population, and of Colorado’s 64 Counties, Adams County had the second highest proportion of children to adults, at 29% (Adams County Youth Initiative). Adams County is also home to many families living in poverty. In fact, from the 2010 Census Bureau Report, there were approximately 21,668 children under the age of 18 living below the poverty level. According to the Kids Count Data Center, that number grew to 24,335 in Adams County by 2015. These families struggle during the holiday season with paying their rent and utilities vs. buying gifts for their children; a community issue we hope we can help with.
School Resource Officers assigned to the Juvenile Services Unit of the Sheriff’s Office work in all unincorporated public schools, in six different school districts, as well as parochial and private schools, daycare facilities, and community centers. Those S.R.O.s, as well as Patrol Deputies and Victim Advocates, nominate children to receive a gift through their personal knowledge of a family’s hardship and needs. Children may also be nominated through patrol contacts involving unfortunate and sometimes heartbreaking situations, in which the children can benefit from a positive interaction with a deputy. (Nominations by others and self-nominations are not accepted.)
Why are we asking for donations in the summer? Waiting until October and November to raise money and collect gifts can result in too little funds and ultimately some kids getting nothing. So while the kids are out on summer break, we are hard at work seeking donations to fill their needs. Monetary donations in the form of cash, check, or credit card are graciously accepted, which will then be spent to buy the children’s gifts. We also accept new unopened gifts such as toys, dolls, games, sports equipment, art supplies, clothing, coats, boots, and shoes for infants and children up to 16 years of age. We check and then wrap all gifts before they are hand delivered by a deputy, so please do not send them pre-wrapped.
Christmas Connections is a tax deductible non-profit 501c-3 organization, established through the Adams County Sheriff’s Foundation. We are deeply committed to strengthening our community and are seeking partnerships with businesses and community members who share our compassion. If you would like to make a contribution by credit card, please go to adcosheriffsfoundation.org to make your donation. All other donations can be picked up by Deputy Michelle Timm. Deputy Timm can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 720-322-1116.
